I'm trying to obtain any information about insuring our troops trailer and its contents. Is it available from BSA? Is it the troops responsibility or charter org? Additionally, what is required of towing vehicle in respects to insurance. Any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated as I have sent 4 messages to council without any reply. THANKS!

The Troop's trailer & all of it's contents, belong to your unit's Charter Organization. I would talk to your Charter Org Rep about this issue.

As for vehicle insurance, this is what BSA's Guide to Safe Scouting has to say -

All vehicles must be covered by automobile liability insurance with limits that meet or exceed requirements of the state in which the vehicle is licensed. It is recommended that coverage limits are at least $50,000/$100,000/$50,000. Any vehicle designed to carry 10 or more passengers is required to have limits of $100,000/$500,000/$100,000.

For any Scout activity, it is possible for the unit to purchase additional liability insurance from their council.

It is my experience with Allstate that any vehicle that has the capability to tow a trailor will also have the same insurance on the trailor and its contents. So looking for insurance for your trailor is already available through Allstate at no additional cost... the best part about this is that the trailor does not have to be in your ownership.

This is probably true with other insurance companies, but you should call your insurance company to make sure what your coverage is.
