Hello Everyone!

I just received our Council Newletter and in there was an article about Scout Participation in Political Events.
It Stated: "with the presidential election coming up in 2008, it is a good time to restate the BSA long-standing policy regarding participation of Scouts in political rallies and other political events."

"Uniformed unit members and leaders may participate in flag ceremonies at political events and may lead the Plrdge of Allegiance, however, they should retire after the ceremony and not remain on the speakers' platform or in a conspicuous location where television viewers could construe their presence as an endorsement or symbol of support. In addition, photos of candidates or Scouts in uniform or BSA marks and logos are not allowed in political campaign materials of any kind.
Volunteers must be alert to situations that would imply that the BSA favors one candidate over the other. Strict observance of our long-standing policy against the active participation of uniform Scouts and leaders in political events is MANDATORY."

I wonder how many of us were aware of this policy? I think that we need to pass this on to every Scout and volunteer that we know so as to keep us all out of potential trouble and embarassing situations.

I agree with this policy.
The BSA is not a place for us to move our Personal politcal agenda.
While this policy is focused on the elections specifically, I have also told the adult leaders in our Distric that they are not spokesmen for the BSA either.
We recently had a situation were one of the leaders in my Troop was asked "on the record" for "His opionion" on some political matter.
HE gave his opinion, but then the follow up question was and how does that conflict with or support the BSA's opinion?
At that point he should have either stated the BSA's policy on the matter or just asked to move on. Instead it was made to sound like he was speaking on behalf of the Boy Scouts of America and that is not within our purview as volunteer leaders.
We should be real careful how we tread on this.
There are some leaders out there that may want to push an agenda that is not in keeping with the Boy Scouts of America.

Happy Scouting

I too was aware of the policy and also strongly agree with it.

We also need to abide by the policies in our fundraising programs. That probably is a little more prevalent.
