Good Morning All!
I figured that I might liven up the discussion a bit by talking about Tour Permits.
I am under the impression that a Tour permit is required any time that you do not have a meeting or event at your normal meeting place and travel somewhere else.
The only exceptions to this are District or Council events.
We have had many a lively debates at District Meetings and Boy
Scout Roundtables over this subject.
What do all of you do about this?

Local Tour Permits are used if the trip is within 500 miles of "home base".
Local councils can specify their own rules on when exactly they require, or not require, local tour permits. Many do not require them to be filed for local day trips of only a few hours.
It is a good idea to get in the habit of filing one, weather or not it is required by your council, every time you are in the process of planning for an outing of any duration.

Nuts4Scouts:
You are right about the distance for a Local Tour Permit. I already knew that. I am of the same mind set as you in that a Tour Permit should be filled out for every outing.
I was just looking at a copy of Local Tour Permit in the newest version of the Guide to Safe Scouting and in there there is a block to check under
TYPE OF TRIP for one day, Touring Camp, Short-term Camp, and Long-term Camp.
So I feel that we should fill out a Local Tour Permit based on this requirement in the Application just to cover ourselves.

I would agree with both of you. I think tour permits should just be used for what they state on the permit itself.
Our pack recently did a show and sell for popcorn at our local Farm Fresh which was only 1.5 miles from our meeting place. Each child was bought by their parent and we had to do a tour permit for this event. Now I think that this was unnesassery. What do you think?

I agree and have been in numerous discussions regarding when tour permits should be filed. The guidelines I have used is “When in doubt, fill one out”.

We have never had to fill out a tour permit for a Show and Sell Booth Sale.
Considering that there is rarely a registered Scouter on hand for the entire sale (if at all), and that your regular parent does not have YP training or carry around the Guide to Safe Scouting, I do not see how the requirements for the permit could be met.

Has anyone been given the details of the on line tour permit that is to come into being this fall?
