Boy Scouts of America
P.O. Box 7143
Charlotte, NC 28247

Dear Sirs:

We have been advised that product safety testing for the Cub Scout Immediate Recognition Kit, Item 01804, that we supply to the Boy Scouts of America may contain lead levels in excess of U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards in the paint on one component of the kit, the totem badge. In light of this development, we have decided to initiate a voluntary recall of the product and have instructed our counsel to move forward with the voluntary recall
without delay.

Pending formalization of the details of the recall, we urge all
consumers to remove the Cub Scout Recognition totem badge from the
children's possession and be kept in a safe place where only adults
will have access to them. Detailed instructions for returning the
product for replacement will be provided when the recall is announced.

We have received no reports of any injuries resulting from use of the kits. Nevertheless, we urge that this action be taken as a precautionary measure, and as a reflection of our commitment - shared by Boy Scouts of America - to sell only products of the highest quality.

Yours truly,

Chuck Kelderhouse
President
Kahoot Products. Inc.

Yep, all the kits at my Council's Trading Post were packed up this past Monday and returned to National Supply.

So when the heck are they gonna get replacements? Pretty unfair to the kids that they now lose out on immediate recognition. By the time they get out new ones that don't have lead my Tigers will probably be wolves?

The Tiger Totem is not affected.

The only recalled item is the Wolf/Bear Progress Toward Rank.

Many Packs are making their own out of the leather rounds sold at ScoutStuff, or some other material. You could even use one long piece of lacing (gold for Wolf, blue for Bear). Tie a loop at the top to put over the button and slide on the beads.

I would rather the kids went without for a while (or wore a homemade one) than used something with excessive levels of lead contamination.

With this recall I believe it is a great opportunity for a den project to make your own instant recognition totem. Chances are that homemade totems will be much more to the boys.

The one Hawkrod did looks great and I bet the kids enjoy wearing it better that the old one. It would be something the boys could make and then use on their uniform. Good thinking.

Wow, Apache Bob and WB Bear are right! Hawkrod's Leather Totem knocks the pre-fabricated plastic (ehhh... and lead coated ~ frown); out of the water. After they complete their first three Wolf Achievements, they could make the totem as part of the ceremony.
