 If a Cub Scout Pack (cub master, leaders and committee members) is currently having issues with an assistant Cub master, can the committee hold a vote and decide to remove them from there current position? It is unfortunate but some individuals seem to forget why they are involved in BSA in the 1st place.

The "hiring" and "firing" of volunteers is the job of the Committee Chair (CC) and the Charter Organization Representative (COR). They can ask for input from the Committee, but ultimately, the decision is theirs.

Before taking the step of "firing" a leader, all efforts to resolve the problems should be made. You should also consider involving your Unit Commissioner (UC). Helping with problems like this is part of what they are there for.

Wow, that is unfortunate. Is it a matter of abusing the position or not doing the position? Have they been counseled on their poor performance? Sometimes I little chit chat solved some simple problems, too. Unless it's a matter of Youth Protection, a leader should be given due process and a chance to improve.

Nuts4Scouts hit the nail on the head. The Committee Chair, COR, and Commish not only have the administrative responsibility; they also have the training and resources to handle such a problem. Plus, technically, the CC and COR signed their application form, too.

The bottom line is the COR. He/she as the say so. The CC can remove a person but the COR can trump that decision. The UC should have been the one to help address the issue before it arrives at the point where remove is the only alternative. The UC cannot remove anyone. The UC should have the knowledge to mitigate the situation. Removing an individual from a position should be only done when all avenues are exhausted. People are a valuable resource to the program; there is a place for most people.

What if it's the CC who needs to be removed?

Removing the CC is the responsibility of the Charter Organization Rep (COR) and the head of your Charter Organization (IH).

The COR is a representative of the Institutional Head (IH) of the Chartering Organization. The IH needs to be involved if the situation and that is actually who has the final say so.

There is a lot of talk about removing someone from a position and it is necessary at times. However, wouldn’t it be far more prudent to spend time and energy before placing someone in a position? Also to make sure that those who take a position understands the position, the responsibilities of that position and will also attend the training and obtain the literature for that position.

The most important thing is that when a unit has problems with it leadership it does affect the boys and the program. It is very important that quality leadership is in place.

BSA has some great literature and video on the topic of the selection of leaders. Your Council Office or your Unit Commissioner should be able to obtain the material for you.

It is so much better to be proactive than reactive.
