In my council I have a issue with everything seeming to be a fundraiser. Can not sometings be just for the boys to come have fun. It drives me crazy that every time I hear from a paid person it is about money. Just once I would like to get something about program that is not also a fund raiser.

Boy Scouts relies completely on the generosity of the community and the income from activities to support the overall scouting program. We are able to operate as Baden-Powell directed by keeping government off our backs and accepting no government funding. By charging small fees for activities our program remains strong and in the control of the volunteers and families. If you hear anyone say that scouting is about the money set them straight - It's about the boys! I for one am happy to pay small fees to ensure that my family has scouting in the community.

Sometimes is difficult to raise the required funds all at once and this might be the reason behind all the fundraising. I would recommend selecting a better fund raiser or a new line of attack to get all the funds required for the year in one fundraiser and be done with it.

Does you Council really hold that many fundraisers? Or are you thinking that all activities are over-priced or should be free?

It is difficult to offer free activities. There are lots of costs that many don't ever think of besides food, craft supplies and a patch. Postage is one and it is something that the Post Office never donates. The Professional Scouter salary isn't much but does need to be covered. There are many who think that Scouting could operate just as well without the Pro Scouter but there are many things that s/he does through-out the day that volunteers don't have time to take care of.
