I was asked by a parent when the pack would be selecting a denner for each den. I had not heard the term before and I asked my Cubmaster and CC if they had. Neither has can someone tell me what it is. All I find on it is an image of the denner cord in the insignia guide.

A denner is a Cub Scout or Webelos Scout elected by his den to help the den leader and den chief. The Cub Scout Leader Book has a section discussing the denner. The denner is not appointed by the pack, he is elected by the boys in his den.

I don't know about now, but when I was a cub there were 2 denner cords, one with a 1 cord and one with 2 cords... one was for denner the other assistant denner. The denner program will add another level to the den program. When I was a cub (many moons ago) the DL often opted to rotate the denner on a month basis.

Frogman: Some dens, particularly new Wolf dens, appoint the Denner instead of having the boys elect him, then rotate the Denner/Ass't Denner duties among all the Cub Scouts on a bi-weekly or monthly basis, with the Assistant becoming the Denner for the next period. The rationale for not having elections with a new den is that it tends to be a popularity contest instead of any sort of merit-based judgment by boys that age. Appointment also tends to help the shy Cubs come out of their shell a bit when it's their turn, since they can't just stay hidden in the background.

You have to make the decision for your den. Personally, I'd appoint for Wolves, at least for the first month or two to show the new kids what the job entails. Then switch over to elections. For Bears or Webelos, they probably have a bit more maturity and you can start with elections instead.

Just my 40% of a nickel...
