My son really wants to go to NJ 2010, but it cost's so much. ($2000-$2200) Can the boy's get sponsor's to help pay for the event? He always sells popcorn so I know that will help, and our troop sells funnal cakes at events in town. But I know this will not be enough. Any suggestions??

From the BSA Guide to Unit Money-Earning Projects -

"Adult and youth members shall not be permitted to serve as solicitors of money in support of personal or unit participation in local, national, or international events.”

Contact your local council and ask for help/info.

That is a lot of money to come up with. The good thing is that he has plenty of time to do so. It also gives him the opportunity to practice one of the points in the Scout Law, A Scout is Thrifty. It is also a great time for him to beginning working on the Personal Management Merit Badge.

Your son has set a goal, to attend the Jamboree. Now it is up to him to attain that goal. I know of many ways boys have earned the money, probably the most effective and rewarding is doing it the “old fashion” way and earn it. For those who are unable to get a part time job they seek out odd jobs (of course under the guidance of their parent). I also know of many boys save money they received for birthdays, holidays etc for the Jamboree fund. So even when asked what they want for those occasions will ask for money they can but in that fund.

Attending the Jamboree is an awesome experience, but his road to attending it will be an awesome life experience.
